Spring at So You

The Road Ahead - Joshua Tree, CAWell I’ve been awfully remiss about blogging here on the So You Media site. I’ve been a lot less remiss on So You’ve Been Dumped’s actual site — managing about a post or so a week. I always mean to do more but am finding there are not enough hours in my day.

The only two things ongoing, or should I say, two-and-a-half are 1) the SYBD (iphone) app. We’ve got a few lines up but one being worked on as I type. 2) a pitch for a So You’ve Been Dumped TV show. The show’s main aim would be exactly like SYBD – namely to help people going through a break up or a divorce to turn that emotional pain into some sort of gain. The “half” – I mentioned was about the So You’ve Been Dumped film which has been gathering dust in my proverbial corner….well this very week I had a fantastic meeting with a wonderful new friend from Cannes and if said person likes what they see – well the film’s rough cut could be smoothed and it could find its way to a festival near you – later this year or early next. We’ll see.

So that’s the only real news. This week is South By South West [SXSW] and, frankly, I wish I were there but such is life – maybe next year?

Finally – Ron will soon be working away on our newest animation video. I’ve been remiss there too – with the latest audio. I really must find time to sit and write/voice it so he can work on his next masterpiece. It’s high time we followed up Jen’s saga – with something fabulous!

Soon, I promise x

It’s December So Here’s Some SoYou News!

Jen, So You've Been Dumped's Real Stories - Chapter 4
Meet Jen

Well great news…after several months of hard work, Animator Ron has completed animating our latest story – # 4 last night.

It was then uploaded with a hidden link that was pasted on our So You’ve Been Dumped Stories Facebook group. (Incidentally, that’s the place to be kept up to date with all our news as it’s breaking).

This morning, the video went “live” and the URL for it’s been spreading everywhere all day (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn et al) a few dozen views on day one – that’s not too shabby…

This month’s “real story” is slightly longer at eight or so minutes. Frankly it could have been three times that, but let’s face it, attention spans in the Internet age aren’t what they used to be…

I hope you have ten minutes to have a cup of tea, coffee, a beer or whatever – and kick back and enjoy the video. It’s definitely a cracker.

Well thanks to MIPCOM in Cannes back in October, I can tell you that there’s hope (and a few plans afoot) that SYBD will become a wonderful, entertaining and inspirational TV show in 2012.

For legal reasons I am unable to tell you a thing about it – but suffice it to say – we’re very excited about the prospect of this happening. When there is something I am allowed to report, I will do so here! If and when it happens – it will be a dream come true!

We’ve Been Chosen!

So You've Been Dumped's How to Dump Your Relationship TutorialI am delighted to report that our “How to Dump Your Relationship” (Muvizu) animation has been selected to be screened at The MachinExpo2011! Ron and I are totally delighted to have been chosen. Out of hundreds of films submitted (or something, I’m not actually sure how many entries there were) we were chosen. (Only 2 other Muvizu films submitted made it!)

On November 19th & 20th, 2011, catch The Machinima Expo, the world’s premier online machinima festival. For more info – see MachinExpo Blog!

Exciting Times Post MIPCOM

Well MIPCOM is over for another year. A week in Cannes was an amazing experience, it has to be said. There were talks, meetings, parties, red carpets, tweet-ups and more. There were certainly egos-a-plenty, but equally there were some nice people too.

Some people understood the So You Mission – some didn’t. Some just couldn’t be bothered trying to. So it was particularly heartening when people did get it. They could see the benefit of what So You’ve Been Dumped stands for. Namely: Helping People. The help can be through the blog, videos, articles etc. Hopefully in the not too distant future a TV show too. We’ll see. Don’t want to say too much lest I jinx it. Suffice it to say it was a great time, I learned a lot, saw a lot, heard a lot and made some wonderful connections. A definite R E S U L T.

SO YOU’VE BEEN DUMPED STORIES

Screen Grab of So You've Been Dumped Animated Story # 4

Poor Jen...

In my last blog entry which was ages ago (oops), I showed you a sneak peek at the next animated story (#4) – due in the next week or two.

Ron has been beavering away on the new, longer animation. It’s a cracking story and the animation is really starting to take shape. Well if these screen grabs are anything to go by!

I’ve not seen any of the story yet, but the pics look good and the story is a great one so it’s going to be worth the wait ;)

Final MIP Push

Well it’s the final push. Everyone who is MIP-bound is either getting ready to board a plane or has boarded one already. There’s a mad push on people trying to arrange appointments ahead of time. People advise one sets up twenty or thirty. SYBD’s got half a dozen. Quality rather than quantity perhaps?

There have been a variety of sound/dub people, editor suites, or animation or production studios in India (and the like) reaching out to connect, but few people who’ve reached out are what SYBD needs.

We’re needing to connect with other TV/film makers, producers, collaborators, content buyers, app and game makers, and the odd business angel wouldn’t go amiss.

Perhaps the best thing in cases like this is to stop stressing about not having/being enough and simply be open to all possibilities. Keep eyes and ears peeled for future trends and maybe, just maybe come up with the next big idea that takes hold.

Sneak Peek: So You’ve Been Dumped Stories – # 4

Still hoping to have our next story premiered at Cannes (on my iPad but still).

Maybe not the whole thing but may be the first 2 minutes. The next story is one of my favorites since launching SYBD in 2000. If you’re at MIP be sure to ask me for a wee gander. It’s a cracker. This is a screen grab from one of the scenes.

Bags of Style for Cannes

Maybe I’ll see Keifer Sutherland, Margaret Cho, Ashley Judd or even a scary baldy-but-butch Eddie Izzard cruising around Cannes.

I think my main hope is to get invited to a Yacht party at night – apparently those are the best and that just seems to epitomize Cannes. Who can blame me, when in Cannes and all that…and I can’t think of a better place to show off my new, over priced Karen Millen handbag!

Good luck to all you MIPPERS…

MIPCOM’s Upon Us – Let’s Connect!

Well MIPCOM is on the horizon. Slowly we’re ticking things off the list – 2 min. SYML showreel, check; Branded USB sticks ordered, check; Appointments booked, check; Business cards received, check.

Been perusing the MIPCOM database for other participants but there are over ten thousand folks attending, so where to you begin? I mean really…

There are a surprising number of people there who have totally-incomplete profiles too. That’s not exactly ideal for networking people, come on. Sheesh. No pictures, no blurbs, no urls, no nothing. Disappointing. Oh well there is always Twitter or the various LinkedIn groups at least. Social media is definitely playing a big role in all of this for me, to be sure.

Unfortunately, the only people contacting me for an appointment are Indian aniamtion companies or 3D facilities etc. Sadly, I have no need for such things, but would like to speak to any independent TV/production companies, people interested in co-productions, content buyers,  agents, development execs, ideas people, etc. You, I’d like to meet.

In other news, at just-over-one-week, our newest Muvizu, animated, tutorial Can Exes Be Friends has had around 150 views so far. Not too bad. Could be better. If only it could go viral pre-MIP. A girl can dream. And dream she does.

Check out the trailer for MIP, it’s mega cool!

So You Media’s Countdown to Cannes

Muvizu Thea

Hey There, It's Me AgainHello everyone.

Hello Everyone! Armed with a few tips from an associate of mine at an American cable network, it’s been all about the researching of companies who are attending MIP this year. With thousands of producers, directors, broadcasters, financiers, etc attending MIP, it’s hard to know where to begin.

To be honest, I feel rather like a fish on a bike.

In addition to research, it’s been a matter of compiling the thirty-minute show reel and doing a 2-min trailer as well. Don’t even get me started on the trouble I had converting Final Cut Pro files to AVIs or starting to write a killer pitch!

Anyway it’s all falling into place. The whole thing is both exciting and daunting in equal measure but it’s a great challenge to have. I mean these are good troubles aren’t they?

Meanwhile, we are hoping to complete our 4th Story in time for Cannes. It may be something only seen on my iPad (in that it’s not made it onto our showreel) but what a great place to unveil it.

Hooray – my own launching of a film at Cannes,…even if it’s only on my iPad. The next story, I can’t let you know, is going to be Jen’s story – one of my all time favorite stories since launching SYBD back in 2000. I can’t give too much away but I can tell you it’s going to be great.

Two days ago we launched our second, animated tutorial on the subject of being friends with your ex. We are nearing 100 views – which isn’t too bad. Each one is starting to draw a bigger audience than the last. Can’t say fairer than that. Better get back to the researching of companies and writing of pitches. If you’re going too, let me know.

Pop over to soyouvebeendumped.com to see the new tutorial, Can Exes Be Friends, if you have three minutes. Its delivery was lightning fast so apologies for that in advance!

Welcome to So You Media Ltd

So You've Been Dumped (SYBD) Logo 2011

Revamped Logo for 2011

Welcome to So You Media Ltd, the Glasgow-based, content-production arm of the long-standing, break-up portal soyouvebeendumped.com (SYBD).

This is the first post on our new blog. It’s all about Cannes at the moment. The prep to attend the content conference there MIPCOM. Here at SYBD/So You Media we like a good challenge though. A challenge it’s been…Setting up a new company, creating a logo, creating a website, filling out form after form, booking flights/accommodation, researching the event and people attending, sourcing all our content for a 30-min show reel, writing material for the UK Indies brochure/website and so much more.

As I type this at 12:48AM on a Saturday morning, Animator Ron and I are bantering back and forth about the 2-min trailer to be played there. It’s nearly done, 98% or so, and it’s awesomely-fun! Watch this space, as they say.
